The HEALTH of the healthcare situation? Going DOWN HILL!

The HEALTH of the healthcare situation? Going DOWN HILL!

Beginning in October of this year, the government is changing the diagnosis codes that we presently use. It’s hard to believe that we currently  have 17,000 codes at our disposal, but the new coding system, which every medical practice will have to use, consists of 68,000 codes! If we have to spend all of our time learning this, how can we possibly keep up with what is really important—like continuing medical education!

This is important, because in an era of higher health care costs and LOWER payments to physicians, the average small medical practice is expected to spend between $56,639-$226,105 to implement this. Unfortunately most practices don’t have this kind of money and it is projected that as many as 40% of ALL medical practices will be forced to close by the first quarter of 2015. This is on top of a projected shortage of 45,000 primary care physicians by the year 2020.

The funny thing is: this new coding system will not improve your healthcare.

Smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking

Smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking

Tobacco Free Florida Raises Awareness About Smokeless Tobacco During Through With Chew Week

“Smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking as some youth may believe,” said Tobacco Free Florida Bureau Chief Shannon Hughes. “In fact, some of these products may contain a higher concentration of nicotine than the average cigarette.”3

There are many dangers associated with the use of smokeless tobacco. Some of the harmful effects include:

• Cancers of the mouth, tongue, cheek, throat, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, pharynx and larynx

•  Increased risk of heart attack and stroke

•  Leukoplakia (oral lesions on the cheeks gums, and/or tongue)

Users of smokeless tobacco have an 80 percent higher risk of oral cancer and a 60 percent higher risk of esophageal cancer and of pancreatic cancer compared to non-users.

– The use of smokeless tobacco also causes gum disease (gingivitis), which can lead to bone and tooth loss.

– Studies show adolescent boys who use smokeless tobacco have a higher risk of becoming cigarette smokers.

– Like cigarettes, smokeless tobacco products contain nicotine, a highly addictive and dangerous chemical.

– Adolescents’ bodies are more sensitive to nicotine, and adolescents are more easily addicted than adults.

– Furthermore, most tobacco users start by the age of 18.

–  These young people rarely consider the long-term health consequences associated with tobacco use when they start and many continue using tobacco well into adulthood, often with serious and even deadly consequences.9

bioDensity machine helps osteoporosis

bioDensity machine helps osteoporosis

The official journal of the International Osteoporosis Foundation and National Osteoporosis Foundation, Osteoporosis International, published research that substantiates significant increases in bone density among bioDensity users. This marks the FIRST time the use of any non-pharmaceutical protocol has been shown to increase bone mass at such  significant levels.

At Kaizen Total Wellness, we have been using the bioDensity Machine as well as Power Plate to help patients with osteoporosis. We’re glad to see this validating research!

New Nexium?

New Nexium?

The Nexium that is currently being prescribed is esomeprazole magnesium. This is going generic in the next month or two. There is going to be confusion over the NEW “NEXIUM” which esomeprazole strontium. The brand will be called STRONTIUM and 49.3 mg will be equivalent to 40mg of Nexium.

What’s important to know is that these drugs are NOT being made by the same company and that STRONTIUM is the result of a loophole in patent laws. I’m sure it will work just as well and have a similar side effect profile, but it will cost $150/month and most likely will NOT be covered under most insurance plans

New hypertension guidelines

New hypertension guidelines

If there is anything constant about the practice of medicine is that nothing stays the same. The latest blood pressure guidelines were published by JNC 8 (Joint National Commission) suggesting that higher blood pressures were acceptable in patients older than 60. They claim that our goal should be readings of 150/90. The problem with this is that it is controversial and contradicts generations of conventional thinking about blood pressure control. The concern is that systolic readings of 150 will lead to more heart attacks and strokes.

This is one study that I don’t have faith in and I will continue to use the old guidelines. The only exception is when I think lowering the blood pressure too much will lead to an increase in dizziness and falls in the elderly.

Decreasing heart disease with dietary fiber

Decreasing heart disease with dietary fiber

A study from England reviewed the relationship between fiber and heart disease in multiple studies dating back to 1990. What they found was that the more fiber you ate, the less likely you were to get heart disease. It didn’t matter if the fiber was soluble or insoluble or whether it came from vegetables, fruit or cereal. What has not been determined is exactly HOW fiber decreases cardiovascular disease.

Are E-cigarettes safe?

Are E-cigarettes safe?

Several months ago I wrote a blog about e-cigarettes stating that safety was an unknown factor at the time, but that ANYTHING has to be safer than real cigarettes. Here is a study from Germany which found that e-cigarettes increase fine particle air pollution and levels of potentially carcinogenic compounds in people who use them. The researchers found a 20% increase in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and a 100% increase in aluminum levels. The study also indicated a concern for second hand exposure by non-smokers and children.

More Supplement Recalls

More Supplement Recalls

On January 30, 2014 The FDA recalled a weight supplement called Mega Slim Herbal Appetite Management because it contained DMAA-which is illegal because of its link to heart disease and high blood pressure

The US Marshals service seized $3,000,000 worth of weight loss supplements from Hi Tech Pharmaceuticals that contained EPHEDRINE (dangerous to the heart) called LIPODRENE, STIMEREX-ES and BETADRENE

Tanalbit, a product claimed to help with digestive health, was found by the FDA to be adulterated because of manufacturing violations. The company was also warned about making false drug claims

5 more sexual enhancement products were found to contain Viagra and Cialis illegally. These include: BALI MOJO, JINQIANGBUDOR RED DRAGON, VIMAX, TIGER KING, and SEXRX.

Viagra and Cialis should only be used under a physician’s supervision.

As always, please be aware of what you are taking. Supplements and Herbal remedies are a $28 billion/year industry and completely unregulated.

Do probiotics help with weight loss?

Do probiotics help with weight loss?

A study from the British Journal of Nutrition found that, all things being equal, women dieters who took probiotics lost almost twice as much weight after 12 weeks when compared to women who took a placebo. The probiotic was a mix of Lactobacillis, Inulin and oligofructose and the dose was divided into 2 capsules-30 minutes prior to breakfast and dinner. The same study failed to show any benefits to men, who seemed to lose weight easier than women. The product used was made by Nestle but is not yet available in the U.S. It is unknown whether other probiotics have the same effect.
